MLOps engineer jobs on carbon.talent, for engineers who build the platforms and processes that let machine learning teams train, deploy and monitor models reliably. MLOps sits between ML engineering and DevOps: less modelling, more infrastructure, automation and observability. This guide covers the tooling that recurs in listings, what interviews focus on, and how to show platform experience to hiring teams.

MLOps engineers make the path from experiment to production repeatable. Typical responsibilities include training pipelines, model registries, deployment automation, feature stores, monitoring for drift and performance, and access control for data and models. In smaller companies one person might do all of this; in larger ones MLOps is a platform team serving many data scientists.
The tooling is infrastructure-heavy. Kubernetes, Docker and Terraform appear in most listings, along with a cloud provider's ML services. Experiment tracking and model registry tools, workflow orchestrators and model-serving frameworks are common. Monitoring stacks such as Prometheus and Grafana, plus data-quality checks, round out the picture. For LLM workloads, add GPU scheduling and inference servers.
Interviews test systems thinking. Expect to design a platform that lets ten data scientists deploy models safely, or to explain how you would roll back a model that degrades in production. Good answers cover versioning of data, code and models; reproducibility; staged rollouts; and alerting that catches problems before users do. You may also get a practical task in infrastructure-as-code or CI configuration.
Most MLOps engineers come from DevOps, site reliability or data engineering. If that is you, learn enough about model training and evaluation to understand why data scientists care about things like training-serving skew. If you are coming from data science, invest in Linux, networking basics, containers and CI/CD. Hiring teams want people who can talk to both groups.
Show your work with an end-to-end platform project: a pipeline that trains a model on a schedule, registers it, deploys it behind an API with a canary release, and monitors input drift. Keep it simple and well documented. Interviewers care more about the decisions you made than the number of tools involved.
MLOps work is offered on contract for platform builds and migrations, and some companies hire fractional MLOps help to set up foundations before their ML team grows. Remote roles are common, though on-call responsibilities may require overlap with a specific time zone.
Career paths lead to ML platform lead, staff infrastructure engineer, or broader platform engineering. Document the incidents you handled and the reliability improvements you delivered; they are the strongest material for senior interviews.
Ask before you join: how many models are in production and how many teams deploy them; how long it takes to ship a new model version; what broke most recently and how it was found; and who pays for compute. The answers show whether the job is building a platform from scratch, consolidating several half-built ones, or keeping a mature platform running.
Applications are stronger when they quantify reliability and speed: deployment time reduced, incidents avoided, costs controlled, teams onboarded. Describe one platform you built or improved in detail, including what you chose not to build. Hiring managers value engineers who keep platforms simple.
If you come from DevOps, a short project that deploys and monitors a model end to end bridges the gap quickly. If you come from data science, contributing to the deployment tooling your current team uses is a practical first step.
Security and governance are rising parts of the job: access to training data, model lineage for audits, and controls on who can deploy. Experience with any of these is worth calling out explicitly.
Keep a short runbook for each system you build. Sharing a sanitised example in interview shows how you think about the people who will operate your work after you.
