Entry-level and junior data roles on carbon.talent, for graduates, career changers and anyone with up to about a year of hands-on experience. Junior data jobs are competitive because the skills look learnable from courses, so employers lean heavily on proof. This page lists roles marked junior, graduate or entry-level, and the guide below covers what hiring teams actually check, how to build evidence without a previous data job, and how to approach practical assessments.

Junior data roles cluster in analytics. Data analyst, reporting analyst, BI analyst and junior data scientist titles appear far more often than junior data engineer or machine learning engineer roles, which usually expect some software experience first. If you are aiming for engineering, a common route is to start as an analyst who writes production SQL, then move into analytics engineering and on to data engineering.
Hiring teams for junior roles look for three things: SQL that is correct rather than clever, the ability to explain what a number means and where it came from, and evidence that you finish things. A course certificate shows you started something. A project that answers a real question with real data, written up clearly, shows you finished it. Pick public datasets close to the industries you are applying to, such as transport, health or retail, and make the question specific.
Build a small portfolio rather than a large one. Two or three projects are enough if each one shows a different skill: a SQL analysis with window functions and a clear finding, a dashboard someone could use, and a Python notebook that cleans messy data. Put them in a public repository with a readme that states the question, the data source, the method and the answer in plain language. Recruiters often read the readme and nothing else.
Practical assessments are standard for junior data roles. Expect a timed SQL exercise, a take-home analysis or a live walkthrough of a dataset. Practise joins, aggregation, date handling and window functions until they are routine, and get used to talking through your reasoning out loud. When you are unsure, say what you would check. Interviewers for junior roles care more about how you approach a problem than whether you remember every function.
Career changers have an advantage they often undersell: domain knowledge. A former nurse analysing clinical data, or a former shop manager analysing retail sales, understands what the numbers represent. Lead with that. Frame your previous roles in terms of decisions you made with data, even if the tool was a spreadsheet, and show how you have since added SQL and Python.
Internships and graduate programmes exist, but many junior hires come through contract or part-time roles that convert. Do not rule out short contracts, particularly for reporting work, because they build exactly the experience the next employer will ask for. Be cautious with unpaid offers and with 'training fee' schemes that ask you to pay for a job.
Your CV for a junior data role should fit on one page and put evidence first. Lead with a short line on the role you want, then projects with links, then skills grouped by what you can do with them, then education and previous work. Describe each project with the question, the method and the result. Avoid rating your own skills with stars or percentages; employers ignore them.
Apply in a focused way. Twenty tailored applications to roles that match your skills and industry background tend to do better than a hundred identical ones. Read each listing for the tools named, mirror the language in your profile honestly, and mention the project that is closest to the role in your first two lines.
Keep learning in public. A short weekly post about something you analysed, a small open-source contribution or answers in a data community forum all build a record that employers can find when they search your name.
On carbon.talent, signing up, building a profile and applying are free. A good junior profile states the tools you can use today, links to your projects and says what kind of role you want next.
Yes, but you need evidence in place of experience: two or three finished projects with clear write-ups, solid SQL, and the ability to explain your findings. Career changers should lead with their domain knowledge.
Analyst roles, such as data analyst, reporting analyst and BI analyst, have the most junior openings. Engineering roles more often expect some prior software or analytics experience.
Usually SQL basics through window functions, data cleaning, and explaining a result. Practise talking through your reasoning, not just getting the answer.
No. Short contracts, part-time reporting roles and internal moves from other departments are also common routes into a first data role.
